Communications

Responsibilities

The Communications Division is comprised of one supervisor and 911 communications operators (dispatchers).

Responsibilities include:

o Directing the activities of field personnel

o Providing patrol officers and firemen with information upon which they may act

o Receiving requests for police assistance from citizens by telephone or in person

o Dispatching officers to respond

o Logging and maintaining records of officers' activities

o Monitoring incoming messages and sending messages via the NLETS / TLETS Network

o Accessing requested information for Patrol via the departmental computer system

o Providing general information to the public on request

o Communicating with the police, fire, and ambulance services

o Communicating with other City departments

o Greets walk-in customers

o Takes fines, monitors jail cameras, receives reports, files, etc.

o Operates radio, Code Red, 911 computer, TDD, and recording system.

Training

Each operator must complete, within one year of service, specified training in areas of telecommunications approved by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement.
