Portions of the trail are paved, some are gravel, and some are cleared dirt. This is part of the national "Rails to Trails" program that brings new life to old railway right of ways. Formerly owned by Union Pacific and Chaparral railroads, the Northeast Texas Trail Coalition — a partnership among local and statewide trail advocates and government agencies — now manages the property. The trail connects 19 cites spread across seven counties. There are several creeks and more than 100 rail bridges. Greenville is a perfect base for exploring this trail as there are three nearby entry points - Farmersville, Celeste, and Wolfe City. The best parking can be found in both Farmersville and Celeste.
