Mosquito Prevention

Mosquitoes are annoying and may pose a health risk to both people and animals. There are several steps individuals can take to prevent mosquitoes.

The most successful way to prevent mosquitos is to eliminate places where the insects breed:

  • Eliminate standing water around homes, apartments and businesses
  • Keep lawns mowed since mosquitoes may be found in high grass and weeds
  • Keep rain gutters free of leaves and debris to eliminate this as a breeding site
  • Empty water dishes, bird baths, wading pools, buckets and flower pots that hold water
  • Maintain swimming pools so water does not become stagnant and attract mosquitoes

Mosquito Control

Protect you and your family from mosquitoes by remembering the Four Ds:

  • DRAIN standing water around homes, apartments and businesses.
  • DUSK to DAWN are peak mosquito activity hours. Stay indoors during these hours when possible.
  • DRESS in long sleeves and pants when outside. Spray clothing with insect repellent.
  • DEET: Use insect repellents containing DEET, picaridin or oil of lemon eucalyptus for the highest level of protection.

Greenville Mosquito Policy

Homeowners or residents who notice a few mosquitoes in their area, should make sure they have eliminated places where mosquitoes breed. If breeding grounds have been eliminated and mosquitoes are still present, it is advisable to apply insecticide or briquettes designed specifically for mosquito control. These products may be purchased at local garden, hardware and home improvement stores, as well as other retail outlets.
