PRESS RELEASE: ATMOS ENERGY TO FLARE NATURAL GAS IN GREENVILLE

GREENVILLE, Texas (Oct. 2, 2020) - Atmos Energy crews and contractors will oversee a controlled natural gas flaring on Monday, Oct. 5 through Thursday, Oct. 22 from approximately 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at GEUS Power Plant, 4201 Power Lane, in Greenville. This process, which will result in a large, controlled flame and moderate noise, helps to facilitate normal, routine maintenance operations on a section of natural gas pipeline in the area.

Flaring is a standard industry practice used to safely remove natural gas from a limited section of pipeline, which is necessary to perform routine maintenance or other work. In order to reduce any impact on the environment, flaring equipment injects the right amount of oxygen to neutralize methane. Atmos Energy employees will be onsite with fire extinguishers and protective equipment, standing at a safe distance to monitor the operation.

The Greenville Fire and Police Departments, Sheriff’s Office, 911 operators and local officials have been advised of the planned flaring.
