Al Atkins was elected to Place 2 of the Greenville City Council in May 2019 and sworn in on May 28, 2019.
Mr. Atkins was born in Niagara Falls, NY and raised both there and in Tampa, Florida. After high school, he served in the United States Army as a Communications Systems Instructor and later a Battalion Legal Technician until honorably discharged in 1976.
After military service, Al had a 25-year aviation maintenance and engineering career with both Eastern Airlines and American Airlines in aircraft mechanic and operational managerial roles retiring as a Manager, Technical Operations in 2006.
Mr. Atkins’ involvement with local government began in 1995 as a result of a neighborhood annexation issue. Since then, he has held appointed and elected positions including Regulatory Review Committee, Oklahoma Certified Cities Program, Coweta, OK. Planning Commission, Veteran’s Affairs Committee and City Council, Norman OK. and as Co-Chair for Norman’s role in Operation Oklahoma, a 2010 statewide salute to Vietnam Veterans.
Since joining the Greenville community with his wife Denisa in August 2012, he has served on the Airport Advisory Board, as Chairman of the 2015 Charter Review Committee, Secretary/ Treasurer for the GEUS Board of Trustees, and Vice Chairman of the Planning and Zoning Commission.
